White hair: Causes and Prevention

Introduction

Everybody knows when we get older; our hair changes colour. We have black, brown, and red hair colours at younger ages, but it changes as we age. However, nowadays, we can see that at a very young age, our youth have white or grey hair. So, in this article, I would like to discuss the causes and prevention of white colour.

Moreover, before going ahead, firstly, I defined how white colour hair occurs. 

So, our body has hair follicles and tiny sacs that line skin cells. Hair follicles have pigment cells that are called melanin. Those cells give our hair its colour. But hair follicles can lose pigment over time, resulting in white or grey hair.

Every individual experiences stress. Some examples of Stress are exams, office, family, emotions, relationships, etc. Further, as the result of Stress, it will increase anxiety, High blood pressure, and sleep problems. However, Stress also affects hair growth and hair colour. So, Stress may be the cause of your white hair.

Genetics is when we have things through our parents or grandparents in the mother’s womb. Moreover, we can’t change our genetics, but you can colour your hair if you don’t like them.

Autoimmune disease

When the body’s immune system attacks, its cells are called an autoimmune disease. It can attack hair and also cause loss of pigment.

The health of our thyroid can also influence the colour of our hair. An overactive or underactive thyroid can cause our body to produce less melanin. Hormonal changes caused by a thyroid problem can also be responsible for premature white hair.

Vitamin B-12 plays a vital role in your body. It gives us energy and contributes to healthy hair growth and colour. For healthy red blood cell, our body needs vitamins that carries oxygen to the cell. So, a deficiency of B12 affects melanin production.

Everybody knows that smoking injures health, but some people smoke due to bad addiction. Smoking increases the problem of the lungs and also causes heart disease. Smoking constricts blood vessels. As a result, it reduces blood flow to hair follicles, and it can cause hair loss and grey hair.

  1. If white or grey hair occurs due to genetics, you can change the colour of your hair.

  4. Take a healthy and proper diet to reduce the risk of white and grey hair.
